So it’s my first month in the real world and after a lot of head scratching and choices the plan is to make. Make as much as I can and as often as possible, hopefully it’s going to be forging but I’ll take what I can for the time being. I have decided to split the business into two; one half of the business will work on producing forged components for industry and other applications. The other half will allow me to make the Artwork that I want.
The 3 cwt Massey has arrived and I have moved it in to the work shop to try it for size. I’ve called her Kitty AKA the Blue Lump and she has been joined by Mag’s or Margaret a Sweeny no.8 super heavy deep throat fly press which is also a heavy blue lump. The workshop is being cleared out and I will soon be digging the hole for the Massey. Everything is starting to take shape and I hope to be able to take on some proper jobs by the end of September.
I will take lots of photos of the process of putting a large two piece hammer in the ground. I have lots of work to do to get Kitty in and running; everything from making the bolts that hold her down to sorting out a power supply and digging the hole. My friend Roger Lund is giving me tips as I go and said he would come and show me how it’s done when Kitty’s in the ground.
I’m also going to take loads of pictures of the work I’m doing and how I’m doing it. One of these Gems is the Hereford Waterworks Museum located at the top of Broomly Hill tucked away just by the river. Over the summer a group of volunteers run the machines every other Sunday and what a sight it was but the museum its self is open all year on a Tuesday 11am-4pm. It’s an absolutely great day out and would be an ideal place for the whole family to see. They are currently working on a new water playground for the kids to learn all about water pumping machines. The only drawback was I had to make two trips to the museum as lots of the pictures that I had taken were blurrier from all the locomotion.
The pumps and engines provided me with loads of research images which were great and I spent most of the trip working out what was forged or cast??? Not all of the machines run on steam some run on hot air, there is a large natural gas engine and one or two diesel engines also; each machine having a different job and coming from somewhere in Herefordshire. There was also a large water wheel running as well.
Other news the Easter break was great and I caught up on some rest and written work. Whilst writing my business plan I managed to find a workshop and source a 2 cwt B&S Massey which is going to be amazing. So all things being well I will have a nice place to work right after college has finished. All that’s left is to make some more nice stuff.
This post might cover some of the aspects that I have spoken about in other post so sorry if I repeat myself. I also like to cover some of the criteria on the course and show how it helps to develop my work. One aspect of the course asks us to describe the designing and making process and show how we arrive, develop and understand our ideas. This is one of the reasons I keep a blog. We are expected to show how we develop ideas in several ways visual and written. Visual is broken down into two categories first and second; first is images that I have taken or found that relate to real life objects i.e. sculptures by Richard Serra and secondary is images that are the ideas of others so one of Richard Serra’s drawings for example. The written aspect should cover our ideas and thoughts on both the collected imagery and also my ideas and feelings about what I’m designing and then hope to go on to make.

A lot of the imagery that I use comes from my back ground as an engineer and working with large plant equipment. Ultimately my choices and ideas are based on this and I find aspects of lots of engineering interesting and inspiring. So the next couple of posts are about what inspires me and why I like it. These images and ideas even directly affect the way in which I chose to work.

My most recent pieces from the lamps that I made at the start of the year to the sculpture that I’m planning to have finished in the next 8weeks have all been inspired buy my love of all things engineered. I have also found a book called the Blacksmith’s Manual Illustrated written by J.W.Lillico which describes industrial and engineering styles of forging. This book has also drastically affected the way in which I am choosing to design and make. I have also been looking at makers like Andy Rowe and Alan Evans for inspiration. The scale of their work and the way in which they work are also very exciting. The next couple of images show where I took inspiration for the sculpture that I will be making on my return to college “Rashomon”. A lot of the images I have collected are of piling and drilling rigs. I like these images mostly for the disproportion in size between mast and body but there seeming capability and strength. They have a deceptively heavy body with an abnormally long appendage called a mast which looks like it should make the whole rig fall over.

Piling and drilling rigs are the muscle of most building sites. They are used to drive cleats deep into the ground and compact the earth around the cleat making a strong footing where conventional foundations are inadequate. This display of strength and competent ability is a direct example of engineering at its finest. It shows that well designed products that use materials correctly can turn brute strength into elegant beauty. An opposing presents through ability not size. This is the reason why I have chosen to use such imagery, I want my sculpture to look imposing and strong but question our ideas of what strength is.
So after the somewhat hurried last module because of my indecisive nature I have decided that this module should run smoothly and without mishap. So back to sculpture and much larger pieces of work. I hope to be able to carry on the path of understanding the difference between hand size objects and body sized objects. It is also my last semester, my last making module and the last time my work will be critiqued in an educational scenario potentially.
So I would like this to be the best module, semester and end of year show that it can possibly be. I am already finding that there is one thing that I do not lack and that his ambition. I took a trip to Dyfed steel stockholders the other day to have a look at their angle iron supplies and what a lot of angle iron they have. The stock that I had gone to see in particular was 200x200x20mm and at a grand total of about £800 for 12m I want to make sure what it will become will work before I order it. If I go ahead with this project I cannot afford to make any mistakes as material costs mean that everything must be in place before working on it. There are also a lot of questions that need answering before undertaking these projects one being how to deal with the weight of such large stock; it weighs about 90 kg per metre.
I hope to make some really structural and architectural pieces that demonstrate both my ability as a designer and maker. I hope the pieces I make appeal to a wide range of people both attracting interest from artists and architects alike. These pieces should demonstrate a wide range of ideas starting with how we use forged metal, the benefits and abilities of using steel and most of all they should highlight how we use forging in the 21st-century. The goal is to create one large sculpture that uses forged and fabricated techniques together to create an object of great strength and beauty. I also hope to make a slightly smaller piece that is both functional and has an element of sculpture whilst embodying everything I have stated a bout. This second piece will be a set of railings to hopefully replace one that is in the new Queens building at the College Road campus Hereford College of arts.
As I make the lights I’m finding that there are quite a few options to make many different types of lamps and wall fittings. At this current rate I could have made 5 pieces if it wasn’t for the time I wasted messing around with the locks and boxes.

So lamp 1 is almost complete and has the most options for setup it will have two variations on Shades/lamp heads and also three variations on bases or mount. On first glance it resembles an angle poise lamp but the influences come from earthmoving equipment and as I placed the cable on the arm I hope this representation will become much stronger.
Lamp number two is just about done as well and needs a few minor tweaks and the light fitting. This is more like a traditional standing lamp but it folds away and the roots of the idea exist in the design. I wanted there to be a real emphasis on simplicity whilst having a clever mechanism. And once again this is based on an access platform as opposed to some sort of equivalent desk lamp.
In order to keep a consistent theme all the lights will be LEDs and run-off 12 V systems. Most plant equipment and machinery uses low voltage circuitry somewhere between 12 and 24 V therefore my lamps should as well. I have chosen LEDs for several reasons; firstly their reliability and usability are exceptionally good, most manufacturers offer somewhere between 15 to 30,000 light hours and in comparison to energy-saving or incandescent lamps this is extremely good value for money. The 12 to 24 V means that they are very safe and the earth all the live could run through the body of the lamp. They are also low-energy users and they run around 2-6 watts whilst still producing great like quality equivalent of 10-20 watts per LED watt. The quality of the LEDs and their very modern and unique look should make the pieces feel extremely contemporary.
Throughout this project I have been conscious not to take ideas and references from actual lights and lamps. The reason is extremely conscious and I feel that making such choices has worked quite effectively. I’m able to design and produce objects that do not look and feel like lights that have been seen before. Well at least I hope and I also hope that the pieces come across like the sort of plant equipment you might find on a building site; where I take strong influences.
The way we forge and many of the styles we choose to forge in our quite traditional. What is tradition and what or who influences these styles? For the most part most traditional-esque blacksmiths forge in a very pre and Victorian style, they use pre-Victorian tooling and techniques. Victorians were very influenced by elaborate and flamboyant designs with the emphasis on grandger such as in the Brock and the rococo designs. As we stumble in to the future we have to ask a couple of questions about what it means to be a blacksmith. For the most part style change with time as a matter of course and are predominantly affected by styles that predate them. The way in which we work with metals for the most part doesn’t change but it’s the tooling and the science that alter slightly this in turn can and has affected how we design and what we make.

One of the most important questions that must be addressed is the way in which we heat metal. Ultimately one of the fundamental aspects of the Industrial Revolution was the way in which we used fuel. Predominantly we use fuel much the same as we did during these times; the consequences, side-effects and overall issues that surround fossil fuels needs to be addressed. As blacksmiths the ability to heat and hit hot metal is the essence of our craft and without a heat source what will we do. One solution could be the development of induction furnaces or the use of less harmful chemical fuel based hearths.
Other aspects that the future may bring up are the types and way in which we use our material. If the forging process was understood better the benefit of forging billets stock could allow industries to lower waist material. There should be a duty of care with what materials go into work we make and whether or not they serve to be of any significance.

The introduction of more efficient and effective machinery alters the way in which we work as well. Should we all deny such techniques and machinery or is it right to embrace new technologies. One such technology which many blacksmiths use is laser cutting and other types of CNC profiling. Not only are these technologies saving use time but they reduce costs which is all ways good for small businesses. And lastly the type of work that Smith’s will incur is also likely to change as it has for centuries.
Well It’s actually Power Hammer Time and how I love power hammers! Since travelling to Sweden to work with Roger Lund my views and ideas about contemporary forge work and how it affects our culture has completely changed. I went from being someone whose ideas about forging were stale and misinformed, to a true fanatic about hitting hot metal. Well hitting hot metal with power hammers that is.

We live in an era of post Victorian engineering and we are the results of the Industrial Revolution. In fact we might say our culture is by product of steel manufacture; we are who we are and we do what we do because of steel. The creators of our culture could quite easily be the men that were once called blacksmiths, who then went on to become engineers, architects and inventors. Some might even say that the downfall of the local Smithy and its inhabitants were the blacksmiths that built our future.

Forging didn’t die quite like the Smithies across the country did instead the process found a new home hidden away behind the walls and roller doors of factories up and down the country. Each year Europe produces somewhere in the region of $14 billion worth of forged components, you can find these components in everything from cars to planes, tools and almost anything else that can be made from steel. The forging process can be quick and extremely effective when it comes to manufacturing it also provides quite unique attributes and can be used to improve steel quality for application.

As demand for forged components increased during the Industrial Revolution the types of machines and tooling changed to me such demands. One such type of tooling was power hammers and they came in all shapes and sizes. The idea of a mechanical tool to take away some of the burdens of forging wasn’t new, but what was new was steam power this technical little marvel would revolutionise the way in which we forged. Power hammers became exceptionally versatile and the control that they allowed the users was astonishing. As we explored their potential ultimately their size increased.

Power Hammers have changed somewhat over the centuries and we now use pneumatic power hammers and also we have started to use hydraulic presses each one providing its own unique benefits. I have always enjoyed working with and on large powered machines and it is a pleasure to produce products using such wonderfully primitive tools in essence. Also the nature of the tooling provides some interesting quirks and with practice power hammers are exceptionally versatile.
After putting quite a considerable amount of time into the locks and boxes I realised that they just were not going to work and in order to make them right meant going back to the drawing board. I made a decision to drop the project and start fresh and the results have been very pleasing.
I’m back working the way I love and I’m comfortable with the way I am choosing to forge. The boxes were failing on many levels and I felt that achieving a final outcome was important; I could have spent a lot of time and money trying to get the boxes to work and ultimately have nothing. Also what little forging I was doing was a result of poor design and it felt stuck on. I now have two part finished lamps and I’m now ready to begin forging the third.

The lights have been influenced by the piece I made for John and the desire to create elegant and interesting forge work that shows the use of contemporary forging techniques. I am concentrating a lot of my efforts on the production of all my stock, fixings, fastenings and where possible electronics. As prototypes go I’m very satisfied with the two lights as far. Also my productivity is up and I’m no longer messing around with plastic maquettes and trying to find cheap prices for water/laser cut components.
So this post might sound a little hypocritical but this is a topic that has interested me for quite some time now. I am looking at boxes and locks; I hope to be able to produce my own lockable boxes buy the end of the module. The making of locks was once the job of the local smith and this covered everything from door locks to safes all though the very early locks didn’t offer what more modern locks do. For the most part the lock offered a delay to help prevent the entry of the unwanted and not much more. These early locks are called warded locks and where more like obstacles before the latch could be opened. To open the latch the obstacles or wards had to be navigated and all this really took was time a blank key and a good set of files to cut the bare bones of the key. This is where the term skeleton key comes from filing a blank key to its bare bones.

At the start of the 1500’s lock making became a very specific job and the title of locksmith became a more common term. With Spanish smiths producing some of the finest locks in the world to coincide with their nation’s massive gold movement around the world which was greater than any other nation at the time. For the most part keeping good safe on ships created the demand for better locks. The safety of goods even extended to the crew of the ships moving these expensive goods around; pay and other possessions where often locked away on the ships safe box called the Armada box. These large wooden trunks quite often started out with single point warded locks and then became very intricate multi point locks that needed several keys to open them. The mechanisms of the safe boxes were often very beautiful and complex. But the complexities and beauty of the boxes, trunks and safes that contained gold and other expensive items could also kill you. Smith’s often rigged locks they could dismember fingers, limbs or even shoot you.
Then the mortise type lock was invented and has become very popular; this type of lock is often found in action today in are homes and places of work. This lock provides a level of security that only a well-trained person can overcome or for the simple minded the only way to gain access would be the complete destruction of the lock and all its bolts. We now have very complex and clever locks that have become the work of science fiction. They use computers and know when they are being picked and some become safer as they are picked. To be able to make a good lock today means one must be as clever and devise as the Spanish locksmiths that used brutal techniques in the past.
I have lots to tell you guys and loads to show you too. I’ve just started my 3rd year and I’m flat out with projects, essays and business plans. I’m going to try and post as much as possible and at some point in the not too far future I hope to have a web site up and running.

So the summer was nuts and to say I didn’t do much was an understatement. Some of the high lights were the royal welsh show in which I won the live event for students. I also installed the Fresh Air sculpture which I sold to the site owners; so it is now a permanent piece at Quenington. I also finished and installed the light which looks great.

Thanks to everyone how helped last year and I hope I can make this year as good.
I have to do less drawing now so I’ll be able to get more stuff out to you soon. My making is going super well and my car is starting to feel the load of all this extra work like me. So the last couple of weeks has been spent cutting, bending, forging and moving silly heavy stock about and if I’m honest it’s been really quite hard. On the up side the whole experience is going well and I’m enjoying the process but I will need a brake after all this.

I’ll stick some pictures up so you guys and girls can see what I’m up to and how it’s all going. I also want to thank some people as none of this would be possible without them. My first shout out goes to Ambrose Burns whom is a bit of a legend in my eyes right now. Not only has he really started to get some amazing work out there but he has helped me no end and I’m truly grateful. Over the summer I hope to go round and make a couple of little blog posts and maybe some vlog posts about other blacksmiths and also guys on my course. I think I will start with Ambrose and show you some of his work and what he gets up to.
I also want to shout out to all the staff at HCA at the HE centre you guys are amazing and I think I’ll make a post about them and HE also as next year we are on the move. I want to thank SWS Special welding services on Plough Lane, Hereford thanks for all the help as well, especially Mike and Ian. They are sorting stock, bending stuff and water cutting quite a cool bunch of guys. Last and no mean lest thanks Paul and Andy at Pioneer you guys are amazing; it quite odd to feel as if you know so little after such a long time. Some of the nicest and brightest guys I have ever met. Thank you guy you are also super cool.
Thanks to monkey for all the support Love you xx
This post is a little late because I have been waiting to show John and Elaine the design ideas for the hanging light. We also discussed finishes, types of lighting and timescale/costs so I’m now ready to go ahead and start making. I went to their home today to show them the design drawings and they seemed really impressed and positive.

The brief was to create a hanging light that was unique and contemporary; in form, design and technology. They were very keen to have a piece that used forge elements but the same time had other elements like machined components and glass. They also wanted much more than just a light, they had spent quite a lot of time looking for something to fill the space that they have asked me to work with. So I have taken a traditional twist on the cart wheel type of hanging light and made it very sculptural. The piece will be made mostly of steel and have some forged and machined brass components. And the lights will be stripped LEDs or flexing LEDs that can be controlled with a remote. Combining each of these to create something that John and Elaine seem to have fallen in love with. All that’s left is to make the piece and I hope they will like it as much as the drawings.

I’ve produced a range of drawings using sketches, more technical drawing and CAD. I have put some of the images that I created below hope you guys like.
What an amazing week, I will add it to the running list. So things just keep getting busier and better, I have just finished my first week with Paul at Pioneer prototype engineering. I also met up with John to discuss the hanging lights commission and I was offered it and will start work on that ASAP.
Next week I hope to collect the stock that Ambrose ordered for Fresh air for me and start prepping for college which restarts on 22 April. I have six weeks till assessment and then I believe I have two more weeks to fresh air. So I’m very busy and have to produce two pieces now by the end of term. As I have offered to complete Johns lights as part of my CP2. I’m currently working on drawings for the light and as far as concept goes it’s an open goal.
This Friday I went to see John and his wife Elaine and talk to them about the commission; we talked about what they wanted and what I could offer them. It was an absolutely amazing event and they have pretty much offered me free rein. They’ve asked me to produce a large hanging sculptural light that can be placed in their entrance hall. They would like some think fairly contemporary and very bespoke.
I took a long range of samples and some finished work to show them what I could produce and talk to them about my ideas and what I would like to produce for them. So bring on the drawing board I’ll keep you guys posted and share all the news as and when it comes.
Thank you to everyone who has helped me over the last couple of years. I’m at the point of making an idea into reality and I owe that to a handful of amazing people.
Dell, Ambrose, Adrian, Richard, Mel, James and all the other guys over at HE Hereford College of art.
Paul and Andy at Pioneer prototype engineering
John and his lovely wife Elaine thank you guys I couldn’t have done any of this without your help.
Also I owe a superduper thank you to monkey you are amazing and most of this has come about because I said hey, how’s it going.
on 6 April 2013 I went to my first forgein at Bringsty forge. The forge is owned and run by three blacksmiths Adrian Legge, Henry Pomfret and Tony Ingerfield. Adrian and Tony are both tutors at Hereford technical College, they teach blacksmithing at Holme Layce agricultural College. The event was for one day and attended by a number of smith’s from across the country. We had a small forging competition based on the inspiration of the number three. After the competition we had a barbecue and people join together for singing and more forging.
I forged a piece for the competition but it was quite difficult to make some think as at some points there were 3 to 4 people sharing a fire and anvil. A made a piece that looked a lot like my most recent work and consisted of three components riveted together with brass rivets. I had a nice idea by cutting into the frame and pulling part of it out to make a leg. There was a really wide range of pieces made varying in size and style. Some pieces were very complex and took all day to make and others were very quick and easy. It’s was lots of fun and really nice to meet and work with lots of new people.
The competition was judged and I came nowhere, but first prize was the admiration of fellow competitors. Adrian then put some large sheets of steel onto the fires and we burnt some meat. The whole day was lots of fun and I learnt loads. Thank you Adrian, Henry and Tony I had a wonderful time and can’t wait for next year.

Well for you guys things just get better, that’s a hat-trick three out of three. I’m not going to make a habit of posting every night but it’s been an interesting week. So I was woken this morning by a phone call from a local engineer called Paul Wargent who owns a company called Pioneer prototype engineering. I visited him a few weeks ago to ask for some advice and help; he gave me both help and advice and also offered me somewhat more. As a result today I worked for Paul making some components on one of his CNC Mills.

As I stood at the machines waiting for it to finish a run so I could change the tool, I was approached by one of the guys in the workshop. After a chat he offered me my first blacksmithing commission and to be honest I was a little overwhelmed but it’s made an already amazing day even better. I must’ve killed at least six hours in the workshop today and I hope I was some help to Paul and Andy (whom I might have distracted ever so slightly.) So at the end of the day Paul approached me and offered me some work for the rest of the Easter break with the potential of becoming a member of his team.

I approached Paul with the intention of learning more about machining processes so that I could effectively use them in my work as an artist. And as an added bonus he also said that I would be free to use these facilities within reason in my own work.
Yesterday I talked about having work photographed and put into a catalogue and the pictures are back. This is more like a top up post I guess. I also have some images of a new piece that I have been working on and hope you guys like it.

Alongside fresh air I am also completing several other modules; these are cultural studies, discourse, work based learning and contemporary practice 2. Each one of these modules demands separate and unique skill sets. Contemporary practice 2 is the most vocational of all four and is ultimately the reason I’m on the course. This piece that I have created has some correlation to fresh air but is a much more evolved idea. The reason that I am pursuing fresh air and CP2 alongside each other is because the evolution of the idea for fresh air is narrow and potentially weaker. This means more work for me but ultimately should be worth it.
Again I’m calling out to my audience what do you think? I’m interested as a maker your ultimately people who will receive my work. This might be in a visual context i.e. sculpture or viewed work in a gallery or you might be interested in buying one of my pieces making you a customer. This intrigues me and I’m really interested in what you think!
So I made a promise about blogging at least once a week and I’m going to try and keep it; I was worried I wasn’t going to be able to write very much this week. It’s been a very busy week and I haven’t done very much making but, I have been doing a lot of prep for projects that are coming up. I have also had formative assessments and production plan to hand in.

How do you make 50 kg float? This has been the big question of my week and as a result I have been crunching a lot of numbers. I have also been collecting quotes for stock, contracted work and commissions as a result have spoken to a lot of people. This has all been part of my Fresh Air project and I have been working on how I’m going to construct my Piece and there is so much to take into account. The finish Object is becoming quite the beast and is going to weigh somewhere in the region of 200 kg. Some of the stock sizes that I will be using is 50 square and as a result both cost wise and environmentally I have been looking for alternative suppliers (Scrap Metal and Reclamation). Other alternatives are very hit and miss as a result might not provide me with the best results.

One of the main qualities of my piece is the form and this will affect the overall feel of the work. Although there are only four major components in the sculpture each component must accurately and efficiently reflect certain ideas. Therefore the way I choose to construct components directly influences the overall feel of the finished object. Clean, crisp and accurate forms will allow me to create structure that looks elegant and strong but without compromise. So for the main body of the sculpture I have been looking at a third party creating this component. SWS (special welding services) has a 350 ton press brake, which I’m hoping that they will be able to fold an accurate and sleek arc out of 20 mm thick plates.
I have also been talking to some glassblowers about creating a vessel to float one end of the arm on my sculpture. Mathematically and visually this is proving very difficult; I want my work to look elegant and give a certain feel but at the same time I don’t want it to look like a toilet cistern. If the arm is able to float then it will interact with the water much more intuitively and give me the desired qualities that I’m looking for.

We also had to produce a small statement, visual representation and name for our work for the fresh air catalogue. This is all new to me and will be my first public display of my work. It’s quite exciting and interesting to be going through this process I must admit for the most part I’m not enjoying it but the overall experience from start to finish should be good. All educational side also working a lot larger than the normally would and I think this feels quite daunting. There is also a cultural exercise within this project to see how people take to my work. What they think as visually and conceptually.
I’m making a conscious effort not to use any typing if possible and to be honest it’s a little weird; but it works really well. So I’m not going to edit this at all. I have also got loads of new equipment like a drawing boards and I started using my scanner printer. So as a direct result I might be churning out more crap and waffling lots so here goes the post. Now my new laptop and software is here I should be able to post blog much easier as i made a statement earlier on in the year that I would be making a blog post every week. That hasn’t been the case and I also feel I should be talking more about myself and my work. So that will also be a change like as had previously I have some new equipment like a drawing board that was given to me with the parallel arms broken; and now that its fixed its really cool. I also got a lamp as a present which was also broken which is also fixed now. I have my laptop with all the cool gear and software so should be even easier to get some cool stuff done this year.

So a lot of my time this new semester has been taken up by a project called fresh air. Fresh air is a biannual sculpture exhibition that raises money for the fresh air trust. The opportunity that I have been offered is incredible, they want me and my class mates to fill a number of exhibition spaces that will have some where in the region of 16,000 people see them. I personally think this is an incredible opportunity and something that I have pressurised myself unnecessarily about. Saying that, I have got a place and the added pressure I guess has helped and hopefully I can create something really nice that will get me noticed.

Fresh air takes place on the 23rd June in a small village called Quenington, in Cirencester. As students at Hereford College of Art we were asked to produce work that responded to the site. The piece that we create has to be based in our chosen profession and reflect ourselves and our concepts as designer makers; so I have chosen to create a piece that reflects the beauty of nature and innovation of the human mind. Hopefully my piece will show the unique balance that planet Earth is in. I’m hoping to create a piece that directly reflects the way I see the world around me, I have picked very direct visual influences that I will used to inform my ideas. These are based on seeing limbs of trees hanging into the waters that run to turn a once working water Wheel; I want my piece to directly reflect both of these visual experiences. So I hope that I will be able to produce a sculpture that looks both mechanical and organic and interacts with the water in the same way as the trees and the water wheel.
So if you want to find out more about fresh air they have a website http://www.freshair2013.com/ and a Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/FRESH-AIR-Quenington-2013/220719344729151?fref=ts so go along and check out.

So this is a request to my readers. I do not know who you are, but I would like to. I get a lot of information on blogger about the people who view my posts, and a lot of these are quite random hits and as a result I’d like to know what you guys want to know about me and what I’m doing because that’s why you’re reading I think and I hope. So let me know what you like, what you don’t like and what you would like more of and questions if you have them because I’m sure there must be people out there with questions about all sides of forging and blacksmithing.
The other day my Learning support equipment turned up and It couldn’t have arrived sooner. I have been dyeing to get my hands on a laptop, not just for the massive aid it will give me in my written work but how I will now be able to get hold of Autodesk CAD. In the last year or so I have been playing round with the idea behind forging and modern technologies and how they work together. I made so real progress in my last semester and I hope to carry on, but in recent months I have been show all sorts of new and amazing techs that are available to me. So I’m brought on to this next question “Would Isambard Kingdom Brunel use modern tech to make his creations??? This is as simple as welding gear, angle grinders and electricity?” And I was just in a lecture with Michael Eden talking about using 3D printing and the options that that can provide.

So As a directed result I have found myself asking people to create my ideas in a programme that allows a machine make them. As a directed result I was moving away from the making of my piece. So now I have Autodesk and I’m one step closer again which is great but this itself has a side effect. I’m now adding more layers of design to an already complex and long winded process. I feel that the hand drawing still is important as it allows me a level of freedom but with the study of CAD I can send information to machines all over the world and as a directed result I have l ready thought about using 3D printing and talked to a engineering company that uses CNC lathes so that I can use CAD to its full.

CAD is full of potential and with proper study that leads to well thought out ideas I should be able to make some amazing stuff. This also apply to the forging, 3D printing and other CNC process with balance I should be able to create beautiful and interesting things. If you’re a student or a teacher Autodesk is available for free from http://students.autodesk.com/ You Just need to register and they will send you a copy and they also have many other types of software that might help you change the way you see design also. O CAD is well worth a look and is going to open lots of doors for me from basic design work at college and I hope in the future with customers and other skilled people.

So from the modern to the crazy hears me and some of my class mate forging a big ring old school style. Tell me what you think about any of the items in this blog post and the silly video. Thanks
Its not just about an aesthetic it can be all about the process and that process can allow me as an artist and an engineer some truly amazing things. I truly believe that forging has something to offer me and my creative process. I’m not saying I'm a blacksmith and I don't really want to but I'm really starting to value the process. when done right its fast, impressive and rewarding but really difficult.

There where two reasons for my trip to Sweden one was to visit a college called Steneby and the other was to meet a blacksmith or industrial free forger called Roger Lund. Both of witch have inspired me and I’m going to try really hard to uses forging not only to inform my work but to raise awareness for the trade; And I really think this is possible. Roger and Stenby are both very modern working environment not only in work practice but in ideas. Its nice to know that we didn't fight two world wars and pull are stubborn top hat wearing arse out of the Victorian age for nothing. In fact it just seems that the only stubborn top hat ware fools also still think they haven't become part of the EU ether. (Sorry to all my silly leaf making, Vikings, shouty friends but that will be my last bad comment, Oh and that one as well.)

Steneby runs a number of craft based cause that run from foundation to MA. They have courses in textiles to iron and steel and boast a massive range of facilities to allow a global selections of students to really push both art and design. I was really impressed by the range and quality of work. The work isn't really based on and round process but more what can be done using said process's and with a course leader like Heiner Zimmermann that’s to be expected. The college has also been the play ground for the great Albert Paley where he worked for a week with students and gave lectures and made a selection of sculptures. I am very interested in there design MA which I hope to attend one day. This course would allow me to freely explore ideas that I have about metal work and my own conceptual ideas.

I also went to meet a man who can only be described as Thor an industrial free forger called Roger Lund. I drove half way across Sweden to meet a man that does one of the rarest jobs in Europe; in a little village out side of a town called Kristinehamn. Roger produces high spec components that are used in industrial application and in the auto motive industry. Using a range of power hammers and upsetting tools Roger produces every thing from pinions for Porsche to Drive shafts for high spec plant equipment. He has amazing skills and works at an amazing speed. His control and skill allows him to be quite the smith and his understanding of process means that he can create very complex and accurate shape in amazingly rapid time. Roger forges 45Kg pieces of stock into pieces that have to be in tolerance of 2mm using a 800kg hammer and lose swage tools. I got to have a play on some of his hammers and lets just say he make it look silly easy. What Roger does for a living is very attractive to me and I think what he dose as a smith is very exciting. I mean out side of the finished piece and concept I don’t find most parts of forging very interesting. Its frankly long winded and hard work. And other than some high spec strength application and mass forging offers very little.
Before every one goes nuts and tells me about all there favourite part of blacksmithing I am aware that it has a range of unique and interesting aesthetics. This means very little if it fits nether the concept or the completed piece. The process it self is often a selfish part of enjoying what you make. Its something that is often miss understood by the viewer and the maker. Just because you can isn’t really a reason more of a selfish out look and I believe as makers and artist we owe more to are work. Roger uses his process because it works and it is the best way not cause he enjoys it. In fact what Roger does isn’t rare, but just the way he does it is. America produce about 7billion dollars of forged items every year and Europe produces a similar amount. Its just done with machines and multiple step dies.
The idea that to satisfy the soul a person must work. They must create objects and change there surroundings. I must have an influence over the objects that I interacted with and this in turn creates emotional connection. There for products embody my emotion and provide satisfaction through work. This could be through farming the land to grow crops that I can eat or forging metal to make tools to cut my crops down. These are the ideas and thought of Karl Marx.

Karl Marx came up with the idea of socialism the idea that through self motivated and emotive work that we could work together to create communities that flourish and produce diversity individual who are happy and satisfied. This idea comes from the belief that work is not an instinctual raw animal thing but it is considered and well understood. So when people are forced to work with out there own emotional content or thought they loose this sense of satisfaction. They become disheartened and seek destruction in other whys like possession, entrainment and others.

But this sale of labour for moneys creates problems for the crafts person creator because if they are to survive they must sell there products. Does this idea of creating to survive in a capitalist community still allow use as individuals to be satisfied. And this is where I'm at I believe that as a skilled person I cannot be satisfied by just money. I need more, I need to be able to create and produce products that contain my emotions and self. Can I achieve this in my work and newly sort after practice???

The writer must earn money in order to be able to live and to writer but he must by no means live and write for the purpose of making money.

It seems to be all about tutorials this year and my last tutorial with Del and James Has started the ball rolling again. I have produced quite a bit of work so far this year and everything seems to be going well but I’m having real trouble with coherency. I have made Maquette’s produced drawings both sketches and technical which I have made into CAD files and then laser cut and water cut. So I feel that all is well but something isn’t working. Not only do I use a lot of stored data from my apprentership and working career but I have real trouble showing people the path from idea to finished piece.

One of the main reasons for this lack of coherency is my complete disorganisation. I need to collect my work together in one media that show my work in order and with clarity. So I hope to do this by editing the way I use my sketch books. I have been thinking about this a lot and I need to do this constructively. So I have come to the conclusions that I’m going to do away with my sketch book and just work on sheets of A3 paper of all sorts of type. Tracing paper, Graph paper, Carbon paper and cartridge paper.

I hope to use these different types of paper to allow me to add some coherency to my work along with high quality A3 print outs that use text and primary and secondary images. And place them in order, using some type of binding. I don’t have a problem with using different sketch books but I do seem to get carried away with ideas. I also need to find away to get my technical data across. I was thinking about creating stories about the piece I make like schematics or documentation that cover concept and theory. It’s all in my head it’s just how to get it out.
An instrument to find the weight of an object or objects “scales”. This device simple balances two opposing objects that have an equal weight this can vary depending on the mechanical advantage that an arm may have over its counterweight. This is my concept for my Design development module at college.
We have been asked to create work in response to a location. I have chosen to use Berrington Hall and an idea that talks about social divide. I have some strong ideas about humanity and what and who we are I’m not going into it now cause I have done so in an earlier post but basically together as one we are better. This work will allow me to talk about my ideas in quite a literal way. I originally wanted to make a bench that was going to at one end have a 3 meter diameter but I have come to the conclusion that this might be a little ambitious and hard work in a none academic and vocational way.

The bench was going to be based on the arms of a balance type scales but one arm would be disproportionally longer than the other in fact 6 to 1. This ratio represents the number of staff to house members at Berrington. People were saying how the staff members had money and jobs but I don’t believe that these people were given lives to live but forced to survive. Yes they were paid but just enough to keep them alive and satisfy the idea of having been paid. As for the type of work well it’s not like they had satisfaction. So what if this place allows them to survive that’s not living and if these people had their own community and worked as a village they could do so much. They would still be surviving but they would have a quality of life that you can’t get when you are owned.

That’s why I’m at Hereford College of Arts I want something more, something better. Give a man a job so that he can feel accomplished and he will be happier than any rich man. I don’t want to work for the man so that I can buy their homes and car so that they can keep me in a job to pay for them. It means nothing to me and I hate it, I want to create, design and make so that I can feel alive; A sense of self accomplishment from start to finish.

This piece will let me talk about the way I feel in my style aesthetically and conceptually it can use the social structure at Berrington to reinforce these ideas. The miss balance of the arms must be compensated for a massive influx of weight. This will represent the weight of money and how without it the scales don’t work. In a balance beam type scale there is an even distribution of load and the weighing of objects isn’t constrained to the usage of fixed measures. In fact two items of equal weight work just as well. Or trading for goods that have come from open communities that have quality of life not just survival.
It wasn’t so much about my current brief but more about my making style. The question was “What can hot forging offer that nothing else can?” My answer, well I answered as best as possible but, I don’t really have an answer yet and neither did my tutor.

I understand that Hot forging processes are sort after in the industry to give steel certain properties. These properties can only be imbued into the steel by using heat and force/ impact. Some types of forging can give very particular aesthetic qualities. These qualities are sort after and utilized by smith to create a desired finish or form allowing them to convey ideas through a style. On a very personal scale a smith gains a unique bond to his work as it is very labour intensive.

So I have decided to look at other blacksmiths and their work. I haven’t really done this yet and I guess that this is a little naughty. But I was surprised that I found lots of smith that make work that I really like. They seem to be translating ideas that I also have about forging in their pieces showing form, forge style and qualities that I would like to express in my work.

Work by Albert Paley, Chaudio Bottero and Tim Cisneros don’t really do anything for me for the most part any way. I don’t like busy cluttered things any way so some of these guys work really does me in. For me these pieces seem to be based heavily on speed and rapid process.

On the other hand work by people like Richard Weaver, Matt Haugh, Greg Gehner and Roberto Giordani really get me going. The simple uses of form, making the most of both negative and positive spaces. They use a series of well made interlinking components that really have a feel of time, effort and contemplation. They produce piece that consist only of what is needed nothing more or less. They also seem to consider what the metal can do rather than just how it looks.
So I haven't been blogging much over the summer but the new term is here and I’m going to try and blog at least once a week. At the later part of the year and over the summer I have really narrowed down a style now and I’m quite keen to apply it to my work and the new modules. I produce several pieces for the HE sample wall in the last couple of week of term last year and they have really got me thinking. So for quite a large part of the summer in my own time I looked at how I am and what makes me tick.
I have been looking at some of HR Giger's work for the film pieces to his more sculptural work. I really enjoy both the dark sexual imagery but also their modern and influential design. As part of this I have been looking at the films that he has made concept art for and drawing ideas from these films like Alien and the newly realised Prometheus.
I have also been exploring Art deco design and using images from the period along with the ideas of Giger to produce some shapes and forms that I then apply to idea. I really enjoy The stuff that came out of the early 1900's. I think something change in the ideas of design and what design is. Aesthetics idea’s where still important but so was progression. The idea of make materials work at their limits forcing ideas to work opposed to saying the only way is this way. The stat of the century was more we can rather than we cannot.
I also decided that I was going to try and narrow down what it was I intend to do. Who I am and what I’m trying to do. So what did I realise and what am I doing?

I’m not a blacksmith I am an engineer. As an engineer I use processes and materials to overcome a problem. Some times multiple processes are required and combinations of materials. This is no different from the plant we all share. We are not singular forms we all depend on each other and everything around use. We all share a unique link to everything on this planet from the Moon in the sky to the trees on the ground.

We are nothing without everything.
